Unit 19: Virtual voyage

Computer and travel vocabulary; review of conditional and imperfect; oral and written paragraphs. The unit lasts for 10 days.


Students will be able to:
  • Discuss the proper use of the Internet
  • Plan a travel itinerary with a team of classmates
  • Simulate making travel agency reservations for a tour and hotels
  • Write a daily journal about traveling in the target language country or countries


Meeting the ACTFL national standards

  1. Communication
    • Students will work collaboratively.
    • Students will engage in conversations.
    • Students will work in groups.
    • Students will understand both teacher and student presentations.
    • Students will perform a simulation of a visit to a travel agency.
    • Students will write a travel diary
  2. Culture
    • Students will understand the role of travel in the target culture.
    • Students will become familiar with the appropriate use of the Internet in the target culture.
  3. Connections
    • Students will make connections between skills they are learning in the use of the Internet and their progress in communicating in the target language.
    • Students will learn about the target culture and geography from authentic sources.
  4. Comparisons
    • Students compare the life of the target culture with their own.
  5. Communities
    • Students use the community as a resource.
    • Students use the target language to discuss the projects with their classmates.
    • Students create a context for using the target language in the classroom.

Meeting the World Language Content Standards for California Public Schools

  1. Content Stage III:
    • Students address concrete and factual topics related to the immediate and external environment, including:
      - Media, Internet
      - Cultural and geographic aspects of travel
      - Geographically and culturally appropriate clothing
      - Effects of technology in the modern world
  2. Communication Stage III:
    • Students use planned language (paragraphs and strings of paragraphs.)
  3. Functions Stage III:
    • Students describe, narrate, explain, state an opinion.
    • Students produce and present an oral and written product in a culturally authentic way.
  4. Cultures Stage III:
    • Students use products, practices and perspectives in culturally appropriate ways.
  5. Structures Stage III:
    • Students use paragraph-level discourse (text structure) to produce formal communications.
  6. Settings Stage III:
    • Students use language in informal and some formal settings.
